[00:00:00] Hello, and welcome to the concierge weight loss podcast. My name is Kara Hackleman, and I'm a certified life and weight loss coach. I help people just like you lose weight for the last time. Are you a little people pleasing, a little procrastinating? And maybe a little perfectionistic. Do you eat when you are not even necessarily hungry?
I can help you overcome that so you can finish losing weight and get out of your own way. Join me each week to get a little motivation and a lot of inspiration.
That's what I say every time, right? I just want to hop on today and I wanted to start out with talking about the hunger scale. The hunger scale is exactly the diet that I talk about. And so you eat when you're hungry and you don't if you're not [00:01:00] hungry. Sounds simple, right? So everything else is figuring out how to do that.
I talk to you about your urges and your cravings. We talk about, um, emotional eating and habit eating. Um, with my members, I'll talk to them about planning ahead. So see, everything comes to eating when you're hungry. So we have practiced for me decades eating when I was not hungry. I ate for lots of other reasons.
I ate including when I was hungry, but not exclusively for when I was hungry. So learning how to do that is so key. I love. coaching and teaching people how to do that. And as you do that, you become very empowered to be able to continue this forever. So as I was trying all the different diets [00:02:00] all the years, right, I would get very overwhelmed and I would, um, not know what to do.
So I wanted somebody to tell me what I was supposed to do. Please tell me what I'm supposed to eat, what I can or cannot have, right? And when it's coming from someone besides you, it's very restrictive, it's depriving, and you don't like it for long. And even though that's what I swore I wanted, and most of my clients think they want to, So, I love to empower you to know what you enjoy, right?
We already know what we enjoy. We just think we're not supposed to have it. And then we, um, we empower you to, to really grow into that, I like this or I don't like this. And that's okay. And it doesn't need to be part of your meal. Uh, the other part is how much. And that's the one that people get a little nervous of.
What, we're not going to count calories [00:03:00] or portions or anything like that. And so as they get nervous about that, they start to, um, worry. And as they're worrying, they're compounding their thinking. They're compounding all of that. And so they're, um, as they're worrying about it, they, they start eating because they're so worried or they stop doing the things that lead them to the weight loss that they wanted in the first place.
So I want to talk a little bit about hunger, right? Because hunger, it sounds so silly, but it is So important. And so I've just wound my feet all the way around my chair and it is not working for me. Let me get set back up here. Okay. So figuring out what your body is telling you, this is like the biggest secret to success, figuring it out.
And Most people that have like figured out dieting for years and years and years have, [00:04:00] um, have learned to ignore it. To shove it down and make it small and not listen to what is actually going on. So, start listening to what your body is telling you, and if you're not sure what it is, that is fine. Just start asking it questions, and then get really curious.
Is this what it's telling me, or is it not? Like, was it this? Or, oh, no, now I'm stuffed. That was not what it was telling me. It was probably saying I needed a bite more, not ten bites more, right? Whatever it is, just start listening to what your body is telling you. Sometimes, it's, It's what your body's telling you.
It does not want, and sometimes it's in quantity and sometimes it's in like, I, I always talk that I'm not really great with dairy. So like when I am really just wanting ice cream, which last night we had ice cream that, um, that's pretty much what I had for dinner instead of, uh, what was planned, um, I planned a snack for ice cream and I got to when it was time for dinner and I didn't want to cook [00:05:00] it.
And, um, we, we were packing and getting some stuff together and I did not feel like cooking. So I just had my ice cream for my dinner. And so my body would normally tell me it doesn't want a lot. And then my brain says, yes, you do, you do, you do. And then my body says, no, remember all those times. And so I had to listen to what my body was telling me.
and figure out what part of my body, was it my physical body? Was it my mental body, right? What was telling me what it wanted? And so asking yourself some questions, figuring out what your body is telling, and really get Like, really, I don't know what the right word is, tuned in, I think, is the word I'm looking for.
Tuned in to what it is that your body has been, um, saying. Um, and what it, what it, what it's trying to let you know. Trust in yourself. Trust in your hunger. So when you have followed the [00:06:00] Counting calories or portions or whatever for so long It's it's kind of difficult sometimes to put your trust back in yourself, right?
Because you're like I'm the one who who got myself this size. Of course I don't trust myself, but you weren't listening to your body then and so you were not following hunger You were following all those diets. And so really Trusting your body trusting your hunger. And if you can't trust it yet for yourself, trust me.
So you're here listening to me, whether it's live or on replay, right? And so if you know that you trust me, then trust that I trust your hunger and I trust in your body to give you signals. And together, we can figure out how to really listen and, um, learn how to speak the language that your body's trying to tell you, right?
You'll, you'll figure that kind of out as you go. So trusting that you can find your hunger, and it [00:07:00] just sometimes takes practice. So, um, get good at asking it questions. Am I hungry? And so I have moved a ginormous bowl of holiday candy that my husband has had on our kitchen counter. And it's not because I can't say like that doesn't fit in the goal or I didn't plan that.
It's because I got time.
