[00:00:00] Welcome to the Coaching Kara podcast. I am Kara Hackleman. I'm a certified life and weight loss coach. I help people just like you lose weight for the last time. Primarily people are a little people pleasing, a little procrastinating, and maybe a little perfectionistic. I can help you overcome those so that you can finish losing weight and get out of your own way.
Join me each week to get a little motivation and a lot of inspiration. Week two in the wrap up of the 20 pound down summer challenge. Today, we're going to talk about planning. Is it really that hard? I have many clients, many people tell me that planning is just too hard. It's too hard. It's too much. And they just don't want to do it.
What they're really saying is that they're being very critical of themselves and that's uncomfortable. But it's too hard [00:01:00] sounds so much easier than I'm being critical. Typically what happens, we think that for us to lose weight, we have to write a plan and it gives us great information writing a plan.
So that's why I say to do it. It does not mean that's the only way to lose weight, but it gives you such good data. It's going to let you know what's working and what's not working. When you write a plan and see if you followed it or did not, that's why it's so important. The writing a plan gives you that information.
It gives you the what's working and what's not working. So when people tell me that it's too hard, I ask, why is it too hard? Sometimes they have this idea that it has to be perfect. And I'm trying to write a perfect plan to lose weight this week. Then I asked, well, if you just picked foods that you liked and learned how to eat [00:02:00] those, what would that look like?
So maybe you're loving pizza. Maybe you're not right now. Maybe you're loving some type of burger or maybe it's a fast food week. When you look at what you want to eat, right? I'm like right now we're, we're in the height of grill season. So I love some grilled meat, some really great vegetables, maybe a salad or some chopped up melons.
And whatever it is you put on the plan. What's very doable, realistic, what fits in your schedule, what you're looking forward to having. And then the idea is that planning is already taken care of. You already have the food that you said you were going to have because you planned it. It gave you the opportunity to have the groceries in the house.
Truly the planning makes everything else easier. So when you're in that midst of it all, ask yourself, am I making this [00:03:00] hard because I don't know what to have and I'm making. Some unrealistic expectation of what I'm supposed to be having. Ask yourself, or do I just really not know what I even like?
Sometimes in the beginning, it is, it's hard to figure out what you even like. So think about what kinds of food you like, what do you enjoy eating? Then ask yourself, is any of this reactive in my body? Maybe I don't want to have reactive things, or maybe I'm wanting to eat them, but have less of them.
Maybe I'm looking at things, figuring out like. Um, that are very bloaty in my body. Like many process type foods make my body bloat and retain water. So as I'm actively trying to lose weight, I do not want those types of foods. I love lifting weights. I have an autoimmune condition. I've talked about it many times before.
If I eat things that really are [00:04:00] more of that bloaty type feeling, then it also affects my weightlifting because it not just affects the bloat of my stomach, but it creates inflammation many times in my joint. So for me, if I'm planning, a lot of times I'm taking into consideration, what does my schedule look like?
What do I want to have? How is it going to react as far as bloat and inflammation? You can decide those kinds of things too. Some people have heartburn or digestive issues, whatever it is, maybe you're looking at cholesterol or what your diabetes indicator numbers are. So you're looking at carbohydrates.
Those are going to be personal for each person. You get to decide what you're having. Just plan something that you like, something that you'll enjoy that you'll want to have and learn how to lose weight. Eating those foods that way. You don't have any restriction. You don't have deprivation and you're learning to eat foods that you're going to have even after you're at goal [00:05:00] weight.
Okay. So today we're talking about, is it really hard to plan? So now I've told you, making a plan just gives us data, however you want to say that. It gives us the opportunity to have the groceries in the house already. It prevents us from having to dwell on this later. So when you're home from work, you're trying to figure out what to have.
Nobody in the house can make a decision. Everybody has no opinions until it's time to actually cook. Then that's not what they want. If you've already made the plan, like I said, your food's already in the house. You're not even asking what you're going to have. You've already made that decision ahead of time.
And it's one less thing for you to have to think about. You've just taken all the drama out of the evening because you've already planned. You've already decided what you were going to have. And it was something you were looking forward to. So now you're even creating that anticipation for the evening instead of dread.[00:06:00]
The last part I want to say is that When you're planning foods, it makes everything easy, right? We've talked about this. It puts everything on autopilot and. Just coming up with a little bit of time on the front end makes everything so easy during the week. It makes the planning, makes the food there. It makes what to lay out for the next night before you go to bed in the fridge.
Your meat will be defrosted. If there's something that you want to cook a little extra up to make it easier the next night, or if there's a crock pot meal that would be easier for your family schedule, all that's been pre thought out. I'm talking 10 minutes, 30 at the most if you're just getting started with this, and then the rest of the week can already be finished.
So, there was a couple, I, uh, I'm a massage therapist at a gym for a hospital, and there was a couple that used to come in, [00:07:00] and they would do their monthly planning together. And I thought this was ingenious. Their kids were in the childcare area and they would come out with their laptops. They would make all their plans, their budgets, their schedules, all of their things together.
And so I've revisited this idea many times as I've done other things, but in the planning process, right. We're dreading that. Why not make that a fun time? Like you could create a administrative date with your spouse or your partner or just with yourself. It's an administrative date. So maybe you're like, okay, we're going to, we're going to do this.
And then we're going to have a really nice meal, or we're going to do this over a glass of, uh, wine or. Like your favorite beverage or whatever. Maybe you plan it while you're on the back patio, enjoying the sounds of nature. That planning process can be just as exciting as any other date. You look forward to [00:08:00] it.
You get the information that your family needs. It makes everything else work like clockwork so much easier. Truly autopilot. So what I want to leave you with is how can you make planning fun and really think about it for a minute. What are all the other areas that it has now made easier for you? Like what you heard today?
